Grasscutter is one of the little known small animals in the agricultural sector with a promising economic venture. It is a stress - free profitable venture that will stimulate a fast income without having to go to bed with one eye opened as in poultry business.

The meat of grasscutter (cane - rat) is very rich in protein.
It has low fat and low cholesterol content unlike beef with higher fat percentage.
As a result of the low fat and low cholesterol level of grasscutter, the intake of the meat serves as an antidote for vascular diseases such as heart attack, cardiac arrest, hypertension, stroke, high blood related diseases.
The meat is also good for those with obesity.
The hair, stomach and intestinal contents of grasscutter which contain a high concentration of insulin can be used to produce a drug for treatment of diabetes.
The average dressing percentage of cane rat is 65%.
High demand for bush - meat
The high demand for grasscutter bush meat could be attributed to the richness in protein, nutritive value, medicinal value and the major role it plays in both local and international trade. It is one of the most preferred meats in Africa.
The demand for the grasscutter meat is so high that it.is vigorously hunted and is presently threatened by extinction unless the conservation programmes move swiftly to increase its
Population through domestication (i.e. rearing in captivity on the farm) and intensive breeding programmes.
Role in both local and international trade
Grasscutter plays a major role in both local and international trade.
In Nigeria, some of the highways, roadsides, hotels, restaurants, market places and local bukateria are hot spots for cane rat menu and market supplies.
In Ghana markets (a country where 73 tons of cane rats was sold in a year), grasscutter was sold for almost twice as much as beef and pork.
About 200,000kg of cane rats, which is worth about $220,000 U.S .dollars was sold within a year in one African market.
In respect of International trade, smoked grasscutter are being exported to U.S. and Europe. This serves as a source of income to poor, resource farmers rearing grasscutters on their farms. Without any iota of doubt grasscutter immensely contributes to both local and export earnings.
Grasscutter farming will eradicate local extinction of the animals
Since live grasscutter can be trapped from their wild colony to propagate domestication and intensive breeding on the, farm and consequently to minimize or if possible to eradicate the local extinction of the individual populations of grasscutter due primarily to vigorous over hunting
Integration is possible
Grasscutter farming can be integrated- with pigs, rabbits, sheep, ducks and fowl production.
Free from taboo
Grasscutter breeding is a very lucrative venture going by the edge the animal has over some others. It has been established that grasscutter meat suffers no taboo in Nigeria. It is a delicacy enjoyed by many irrespective of religious inclination.
